It was an early Friday morning- the kind that makes you want to wake up and appreciate everything around, when you smile at your own reflection in the mirror and hum to yourself in the shower. Jasmeet Khurana, one of the city’s most accomplished lawyers loved Friday mornings. “One more day of the drill and the weekend awaits me!” He thought to himself, while leafing through his schedule for the day. It took a moment and a single entry in the book to wipe the smile off his face.
Time: 5:30 P.M.
To Meet: Mr. & Mrs. Abhilash Khanna.
Purpose: Divorce.
“I can only hope I can wrap it up today. Heaven knows I deserve the weekend after this!” He said it aloud.
Although Mr. Khurana had handled a number of divorce cases before, most of them ugly and in a particular number of cases, He witnessed the partners being at each others’ throats quite literally too, but the couple in question here was the most respiteful one he’d ever taken on as clients. How a ‘love’ marriage which took place despite everyone’s opposition, with two successful and sensible people could go so sour, so soon was something he wasn’t able to comprehend himself, with all the years of wisdom and experience behind him. “These guys cant even look each other in the eye now, wonder how they actually managed to fall in love ever..” he mused to himself.
He decided to do away with these questions shooting around in his head, considering it to be another one of life’s ever eluding mysteries and proceeded with another day of property disputes, fighting siblings and partners, fraud, murders and other legal issues.
“Yippee! Another happening day!” he muttered sarcastically to himself.
He immersed himself in work from the moment he entered the office. With two secretaries hovering around him all the time, taking phone calls and fixing meetings to fixing lunch and planning his next week, there was still one question he just couldn’t stop reverting back to “ Why!!?? Why would something like this happen to a pair so clearly made for each other? If this cannot work then it just shakes my faith in the institution of marriage.”
All these thoughts just couldn’t stop the earth from rotating and the hands of the clock from doing their job. He pushed himself back into his work and looked up only when there was a knock on his door. He found himself looking at Mrs. Abhilash Khanna or rather Preity Singh (as she preferred to be addressed) standing at his doorstep.
